Psst! is a whisper from the back of your brain, a trace of perfume of someone who has just left the room, a tune from a distant radio you can’t locate. It is an idea that you think came out of nowhere, but oddly makes a whole lot of sense. It is patient, persistent, and wise. It will hang out until you notice it, it has nowhere else to be. It knows when to strike. It will pop into your head while you are putting on your socks or walking the dog or buttering your toast. It will tell you to buy red shoes. It will put a book in your hand in the bookstore even though you can’t really say why you picked it up. It will say write a story, pick up those paints, notice that old lady, don’t you want to learn guitar? It will tell you to get in a canoe as soon as you can, quit your job, start your own thing. Psst! will keep showing itself to you until you look it in the face, grab it by the hand, and run — even if it takes thirty years.
